AI Overview
AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is a legitimate, large non-
profit advocacy organization, but
many people have varied and strong opinions about whether its services,
political stances, or marketing tactics make it "bullshit".
Common Criticisms
"Glorified Insurance Company": A primary criticism is that AARP is
essentially an insurance company in disguise. It generates a significant
portion of its revenue (over $1 billion in royalties in 2021) by licensing its
name to insurance providers, notably UnitedHealthcare and The Hartford. This
creates an inherent bias toward its partners' products, which some members
feel may not be the best or cheapest option available.
Aggressive Marketing and Spam: Many members and non-members complain about
the overwhelming amount of junk mail and aggressive marketing tactics,
especially around insurance products, which can be seen as hypocritical for an
organization that warns seniors about scams.
Political Lobbying and Stances: AARP is a powerful lobbying group in
Washington, D.C.. Its political positions, which typically align with federal
support for programs like Social Security and Medicare, often alienate members
with different political views. Some feel the organization does not always
represent the diverse interests of its entire membership base or takes sides
that hurt seniors.
Perceived Lack of Value: While many find benefits in discounts, others
feel the benefits are minimal and can be found elsewhere, making the
membership fee a "waste".
Perceived Benefits
Valuable Discounts: Many members find significant value in the discounts
offered on travel (hotels, car rentals, cruises), specific services (phone
plans, tax help), and other retail purchases, which can easily offset the low
membership fee.
Advocacy and Information: AARP actively lobbies on major issues affecting
people over 50, such as fighting age discrimination and consumer fraud. It
provides useful, free information and educational resources through its
magazine, newsletter, and website that some find helpful for navigating
retirement and health decisions.
Accessibility: Membership is inexpensive and open to people of any age,
not just retirees, which allows younger individuals to take advantage of the
various discounts.
Ultimately, whether AARP is considered "bullshit" depends on an individual's
priorities and experiences, particularly regarding their use of the discounts
versus their views on the organization's business practices and political
activities.

AARP is a FAKE organization, in which the members have no voice, and the
insurance company that it sells policies for appointments the CEO and
management team.
BTW, aarp was started by a teacher, to get insurance for teachers. The
insurance agent she entrusted to help her took it over, formed an insurance
company, defrauded people, and was sent to jail. That is the true story behind
aarp.
AMAC actually represents seniors, has chapter meetings, and listens to its
members. It offers more benefits than aarp, and speaks FOR seniors at state
and national levels.
