How student flats are a great investment, but developers create tiny spaces, and push out development for ordinary locallers. <https://joebanks.substack.com/p/how-bristols-tallest-building-will>The Bristol scheme – originally called St James Square in the planning application, but now being referred to by the developers as St James House – has received quite a lot of coverage in the local press due to its size. What hasn’t been discussed is who will be profiting from it. Cain International was co-founded in 2014 by Jonathan Goldstein, who remains the CEO of the company. Along with his business interests, Goldstein has been one of the most prominent figures of the UK Israel lobby in recent years, holding the powerful position of Chair of the Jewish Council of Leaders (JCL) from 2017 to 2022. The JCL is the umbrella organisation for 36 charities and institutions that represent various aspects of Britain’s Jewish community, including the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Community Security Trust. It also includes the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland, a body central to the very creation of Israel, and which describes itself as the UK’s leading Israel advocacy organisation.

Matt O’Brainan joins Tony and Martin. He was arrested on pro Palestinian march in London, for attempting to march to BBC, and he explains what happened. Mass media failures and infiltration. Hamas is funded by Israel Wikipedia page! Israeli support for Hamas Upon a visit to Israel from Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Turkish lawmaker Feyzi Isbasaran in 1998, it was revealed that Netanyahu suggested Turkey support Hamas. Netanyahu said, “Hamas also has bank accounts for aid in banks, we help them too, you [Turkey] can help too.” Israeli backing of Qatar sending millions of dollars to Gaza Qatar started sending money to the Gaza Strip on a monthly basis in 2018. $15 million worth of cash-filled suitcases were transported into Gaza by the Qataris via Israeli territory. The payments commenced due to the 2017 decision by the Palestinian Authority (PA), an administration in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and rival to Hamas, to cut government employee salaries in Gaza. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_support_for_Hamas>At the time, the PA objected to the funds, which Hamas said was intended for both medical and governmental salary payments. In August 2018, Israel’s government approved the agreement. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended allowing transfer of millions of dollars to Hamas-run Gaza despite criticism from within his own government, including the education minister Naftali Bennet. After the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel, Netanyahu went on record denying the claims that he facilitated financing of Hamas in order to create a ‘divide and conquer’ situation. He also said that he transferred funds to avoid “humanitarian collapse” in Gaza. Israeli intelligence officials believe that the money had a role in the success of 2023 Hamas-led attack. Work permits granted by Israel Talks regarding expanding the amount of work permits Israel issued to Gazan laborers also included officials from Hamas. This kept money flowing into Gaza. Debates Use of Hamas to undermine the Palestinian Authority In an interview with Politico in 2023, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that “In the last 15 years, Israel did everything to downgrade the Palestinian Authority and to boost Hamas.” He continued saying “Gaza was on the brink of collapse because they had no resources, they had no money, and the PA refused to give Hamas any money. Bibi saved them. Bibi made a deal with Qatar and they started to move millions and millions of dollars to Gaza.” At a Likud party conference in 2019, Benyamin Netanyahu said: “Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas… This is part of our strategy – to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank.” Prime Minister Netanyahu responded to the accusations of funding and strengthening Hamas by calling them “ridiculous”.

Army was ordered to kill Israelis on 7 October, defence minister confirms – Israeli troops were ordered to shoot and kill captive Israeli civilians on 7 October 2023, Israel’s then defence minister admitted this week. The order to carry out Israel’s so-called Hannibal Directive was issued “tactically” and “in various places” next to Gaza, Yoav Gallant told Israel’s Channel 12 on Thursday. “In other places it was not given, and that is a problem,” he continued. Questioning Gallant, journalist Amit Segal clarified for viewers that “the Hannibal Directive says to shoot to kill when there is a vehicle containing an Israeli hostage” –<https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-winstanley/army-was-ordered-kill-israelis-7-october-defense-minister-confirms> a characterisation Gallant did not contest. Gallant was speaking in his first interview with Israeli television since being fired in November. You can watch a subtitled clip in the video above or the full interview in Hebrew on the Channel 12 website. First public admission Contrary to Gallant’s statement that the Hannibal Directive was unevenly applied in different areas, Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot reported in January 2024 that at midday on 7 October, an unambiguous order was given from the high command of the Israeli military to invoke the Hannibal Directive across the entire region. On 7 October 2023, in an unprecedented military offensive, Palestinian fighters recaptured land next to the Gaza Strip, which had first been lost to the Israelis in 1948. Roughly 250 Israeli soldiers and civilians were captured by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups, in what they called Operation Al Aqsa Flood. Israel’s response was to reactivate and unleash the Hannibal doctrine, extending it to Israeli civilians, as well as soldiers. Fire from Israeli helicopters, drones, tanks and even ground troops was deliberately unleashed, in a failed attempt to prevent Palestinian fighters from taking live Israeli captives who would then be later exchanged for Palestinian prisoners. Roughly 1,100 Israelis were killed. It is still unclear exactly how many of these were killed by Israelis and how many by Palestinians. One year on, an investigation by The Electronic Intifada found that at least “hundreds” were killed by Israel. Official figures, published for the first time last month, revealed that the Israeli Air Force fired 11,000 shells, dropped more than 500 heavy one-ton bombs and launched 180 missiles “during the fighting” on 7 October. An independent United Nations inquiry last year criticized Israeli authorities for barring them access to the country. “Israeli officials not only refused to cooperate with the commission’s investigation but also reportedly barred medical professionals and others from being in contact” with them, the inquiry’s report stated.

USAID funding stopped by Trump. Politico in trouble. Did a Trump executive order just cripple the global US regime change network? With federal funding paused to USAID, pro-Western media outlets from Ukraine to Nicaragua are panhandling for donations, and a multi-billion dollar regime change apparatus is in panic mode.<https://thegrayzone.com/2025/01/31/trump-executive-order-us-regime-change-network/> Among the flurry of executive orders issued by President Donald Trump in the first days of his administration, perhaps the most consequential to date is one titled, “reevaluating and realigning US foreign aid.” Under this order, a 90-day pause was instantly enforced on all US foreign development assistance across the globe – excepting, of course, the largest recipients of US aid in Israel and Egypt. For now, the order forbids the disbursement of federal funding for any “non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and contractors” charged with delivering US “aid” programs overseas. Within days, hundreds of “internal contractors” at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) were placed on unpaid leave or outright fired, as a direct result of the Executive Order. Washington Post contributor John Hudson has reported organization officials brand Trump’s directives on “foreign development assistance” a “shock and awe approach,” which has left them reeling, uncertain of their futures. One nameless USAID apparatchik told him, “they even removed all the pictures in our offices of aid programs,” as accompanying photographs attested. While the Trump administration’s purge sent shockwaves through Washington’s international development corps and the Beltway Bandits which feed at its trough, the sudden severing of USAID money has sparked panic overseas. From Latin America to Eastern Europe, the US has pumped billions into NGO’s and media outlets to fuel color revolutions and assorted regime change operations, all in the name of “democracy promotion.” Now, as the global apparatus of soft American power trumpeted by President George H.W. Bush as “a thousand points of light” goes dark, supposedly independent media outfits from Ukraine to Nicaragua are fretting about their future and panhandling for donations on their websites. US-backed media and opposition face extinction in Ukraine Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US has pumped billions into Ukraine to create and propel a fervently anti-Russian opposition. As former State Department Assistant Secretary for Eastern European Affairs Victoria Nuland remarked to an oil industry-sponsored meeting in Kiev in 2009, “we’ve invested $5 billion to assist Ukraine” to “build democratic skills and institutions” allowing it to “achieve European independence.”

The USAID budget totalled $43.4 billion in fiscal year 2023, according to the Congressional Research Service, and approximately 130 countries received USAID assistanceEurope and Eurasia received 40% of the funding ($17.2 billion), since Ukraine was the top foreign recipient for USAID in fiscal year 2023. USAID has distributed more than $30 billion in direct financial support to the government of Ukraine between fiscal years 2022 and 2024, according to the CRS. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implement the majority (52%) of USAID programs, while public international organizations administer 34%, the U.S. government is responsible for about 10% and foreign governments implement about 4%, according to a CRS study of USAID non-military funding between fiscal years 2013-2022. Among public international organizations, which are formed via a partnership between foreign governments, the World Bank Group was the top recipient of non-military USAID assistance, receiving more than $20 billion between fiscal years 2013 and 2022, followed by the World Food Program, which received more than $15 billion. For-profit firms received 40% of all USAID NGO funding in the nine-year period included in the CRS report, with four receiving at least $1 billion. Kier Starmer on the proposed nuclear small modular reactors which have not been tested nor has the test programme been funded. What are Starmer’s plans for ‘mini’ nuclear power plants? The prime minister has opened the door to more nuclear energy for people living in England and Wales. Keir Starmer said that red tape will be “slashed” and thousands of highly skilled jobs will be created after he set out plans to reform planning rules to make it easier to build the reactors. <https://uk.news.yahoo.com/small-nuclear-reactors-keir-starmer-energy-plans-145504861.html>The government announced that “archaic” rules will be ripped up, while growth will be prioritised ahead of local opponents, or ‘NIMBYs’. Ministers say that the UK has been left lagging behind in the global race for cleaner, more affordable energy after years of delay and obstruction, with the country’s last nuclear power station built in 1995. Under moves announced today, mini-nuclear power stations will be included in planning rules for the first time and a set list of eight sites where they can only be built will be scrapped. Starmer has said the government will make it easier for small modular reactors (SMRs) to be approved by slashing “archaic” red tape in planning rules. Under moves announced today, mini-nuclear power stations will be included in planning rules for the first time and a set list of eight sites where they can only be built will be scrapped – opening up the possibility for SMRs to be built anywhere in England and Wales, where suitable. The expiry date on nuclear planning rules will also be scrapped, and a nuclear regulatory taskforce will be established. Starmer said: “This country hasn’t built a nuclear power station in decades. We’ve been let down and left behind. Our energy security has been hostage to Putin for too long, with British prices skyrocketing at his whims. “I’m putting an end to it – changing the rules to back the builders of this nation, and saying no to the blockers who have strangled our chances of cheaper energy, growth and jobs for far too long.”

Roy Pumfrey, from Stop Hinkley, on nuclear modular reactors and why they won’t work. CND Cymru Press Release : Labour & Nuclear. Starmer’s “anti-democratic” push to put Nuclear Reactors in communities without consultation. Starmer has announced plans to reform the planning system around nuclear power. Under plans proposed on Wednesday, nuclear development will not be restricted to the eight current designated nuclear sites, but opened up to the general planning process. <http://stophinkley.org/>Starmer, speaking in the commons, vowed to “break through” resistance by utilising the party’s majority to ensure there is no dissent. These plans are part of a package announced to encourage AI datacentres to be established in the UK, with SMnRs (small modular nuclear reactors) to power them. SMnRs are an unproven technology sold as an alternative to massive reactor sites such as those currently being built in Hinkley Point C and proposed at Sizewell C. SMnR development is often reliant on government funding to do the R&D and eventual construction work – often funded by “nuclear levies” via the RAB (Regulated Asset Base) on local communities. Communities charged by RAB models are often promised returns in the form of lower bills, a claim hotly disputed. Research in Going Nuclear, a book by CND Cymru chair Mabon ap Gwynfor MS shows that when Trawsfynydd was operational in Gwynedd, the area paid some of the highest per-unit cost of electricity anywhere in Britain. CND Cymru has already recently raised concerns about inappropriate nuclear development <http://stophinkley.org/>in <http://stophinkley.org/>Bridgend. Last Energy, a US-based company, is currently consulting on a bid to build 4 SMnRs in a site on the old Llynfi Power Station. CND Cymru National Secretary, Dylan Lewis-Rowlands, said “If the proposals from Westminster are to be believed, then not only could plans similar to this pop up anywhere in Wales or England, but could also be pushed through against community will from the UK Government. The current ultimate planning authority for projects under 300MW of generation, which includes this proposal, currently lies with Welsh Government Ministers – are the plans here also a proposal to run roughshod over devolution?” CND Cymru vice-chair, Brian Jones, added: “This is not just a question of nuclear development, but of democracy. The intention of this move by Starmer seems to be something that the nuclear power and weapons industry has only dreamt of before – the ability to ignore communities wishes and focus their vast lobbying budgets on getting the central government to allow them to build wherever they want, without opposition. It is fundamentally putting profit before people and planet, and turning Britain into a nuclear power test site for SMRs. It is, in one word, anti-democratic”. Concerns were also raised regarding the intention of these proposals – to power AI datacentres. There have been growing concerns regarding AI in the previous years, with Unions raising concerns over job losses, and ethical concerns regarding the training and utilisation of AI in workplaces and day-to-day life. The energy required to power data centres is vast, which includes the powering of servers and the need to constantly cool them down. It is estimated that training GPT-3, an older model of Chat GPT, took 1,300 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity – the same as a year’s worth for 130 US homes. It has already been estimated that worldwide energy usage for AI by 2027 could be equivalent to the output of the Netherlands. Regarding this, Dylan Lewis-Rowlands said: “The Westminster government seems to have been taken in by the nuclear lobby’s tales once again. The industry always try and co-opt any reason to push development and secure the lucrative government money that allows them to pay their shareholders. To take the Llynfi site for example, Last Energy first proposed the generation capacity will be used for light industry, then when it was shown there was no demand, the generation was for domestic use. No doubt Last Energy and similar venture-Nuclear firms will be touting AI centres in the near future to sell their nuclear myth.”

Farmer protest on Monday – farmer explains what’s happening – If the Labour government do not u-turn and axe the inheritance tax on family farms, over 80,000 farms are at risk of huge financial peril and selling land to pay the bill. This is the biggest crisis to hit farming in generations and farmers really need public support right now. <https://x.com/JamesMelville/status/1888691191039832143>I know first hand how gut wrenchingly difficult it is for farmers to sell their land or farm. Farming isn’t just a job. It’s a way of life. The soil is in their blood. Their service to society is often taken for granted. One of Britain’s greatest assets is the beautiful, lush, green countryside. Our green and pleasant land – cultivated, maintained & harvested by our farmers. But once the farmland is gone, it’s gone. It never returns. We lose our countryside at our peril. Farming should be right at the top of the government agenda. But instead of supporting farmers, this appallingly cruel and vindictive government are threatening the existence of so many family farms. It’s absolutely appalling. Farmers provide our food and maintain our countryside every single day of the year in often harsh conditions and with huge financial jeopardy. Support them. Because no farmers, no food.

We’ll own it,” Trump said at the White House after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, adding that his administration would take responsibility for clearing destroyed buildings and dismantling “dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons”. Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs Gaza, swiftly condemned the proposal as a “recipe for creating chaos and tension in the region”. “Our people in the Gaza Strip will not allow these plans to pass,” the group said in a statement. “What is required is an end to the occupation and aggression against our people, not their expulsion from their land. Our people in Gaza have thwarted displacement and deportation plans under bombardment for more than 15 months.” Trump’s extraordinary proposal cast a pall of uncertainty over the next round of negotiations to extend the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The initial 42-day truce, which will see the release of 33 Israeli captives and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, expires on March 1. Earlier on Tuesday, a Hamas spokesperson said negotiations for a second phase of the ceasefire had begun. If agreed to, that phase would see the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the freeing of all captives. Trump cast doubt on the strength of the agreement and the likelihood it would last. “The strikes could start tomorrow,” Trump said. In his announcement of the redevelopment plan for Gaza, Trump suggested the US would take a “long-term ownership position” over the enclave. “This was not a decision made lightly. Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent,” he said.

Andy Gordon, in Dunedin NZ, on how the Pacific Islands are signing deals with China, causing US to increase it’s military influence in area. Cook Islands PM flying to China without consulting NZ – Government The New Zealand government says the Cook Islands has failed to properly consult it on proposed agreements its Prime Minister Mark Brown will be signing in China this week. <https://www.rnz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/541337/cook-islands-pm-flying-to-china-without-consulting-nz-government>Brown has now left for China without further consultation, RNZ understands. In a statement this afternoon a spokesperson for foreign affairs minister Winston Peters said they could confirm that Brown and Peters spoke over the phone on Friday. During that conversation Peters impressed upon Brown what further information New Zealand required to assuage concerns about the lack of consultation regarding the proposed Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Cook Islands and China. “The Deputy Prime Minister, in the phone call and in writing within hours of the call, repeated to the Prime Minister a months-old request that the government of the Cook Islands share with New Zealand the contents of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and other agreements that Prime Minister Brown intends to sign in China, in line with the requirement for consultation in the 2001 Joint Centenary Declaration between New Zealand and the Cook Islands,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said they understood as of Sunday afternoon Brown has departed the Cook Islands for China via Auckland without any further consultation and the time for consultation “has now passed”. “We therefore view the Cook Islands as having failed to properly consult New Zealand with respect to any agreements it plans to sign this coming week in China. “This lack of consultation is a matter of significant concern to the New Zealand government. We look forward to continuing discussions with the government of the Cooks Islands on this important matter in the coming days and weeks. The spokesperson also said New Zealand deeply values its relationship with the government and people of the Cook Islands. “Cook Islanders are treasured members of the New Zealand family. The Deputy Prime Minister will continue to defend and protect the interests of Cook Islanders, in the context of New Zealand protecting the security and prosperity of all New Zealand citizens and of the Realm of New Zealand.”

Peter Zeihan is an ‘expert’ on Pacific Islands, is anti China, and, amazingly, a top advisor to governments. China Has No Chance Posted on January 19, 2025 By Peter Zeihan In China The Chinese are stockpiling resources – food, fuel, and materials – to help it endure a protracted conflict with the US. Is this something to be concerned about? <https://zeihan.com/china-has-no-chance/>Hey, everybody. Peter Zeihan here. China is stockpiling all kinds of things foods, fuels, materials, in order to survive a protracted conflict with the United States. Is that something that will work and the short version is no. China is the world’s largest importer of energy, food stuffs. The materials they need to grow food, as well as every mineral in the world. There really isn’t a lot of raw material that is produced within China. It’s brought in, it’s processed, it’s turned into value added goods, mostly manufacturing, and then export it. So China is vulnerable to cut offs at all stages of production chain of every industry in the world. Now they are. Yes, storing lots of stuff. But let’s assume for the moment they get to the goal of having 120 days of import cover for oil. Well, number one, so that would last them 120 days. Number two, they don’t have the salt domes at the United States has. So storing has to be largely done above ground, which means it’s something you can hit with a missile, which means that in a hot war, it’s all going to be gone within the first couple of days anyway. And keep in mind, the Chinese are vulnerable to the United States sea power, not just on the Chinese coast, but anywhere that can interdict anything, with the Strait of Malacca arguably being the most sensitive spot, because that’s where about 80% of their oil imports come from. Same basically goes for food. Storing food requires storage facilities. So a while ago, the Chinese built a massive corn storage facility, but all it was was giant piles of corn piled up along the side of the road. And they all rotted within a year, and it all went to nothing. Some version of that will happen for everything. And even if I’m wrong about energy and food and all the material inputs, they still have to export stuff. And their number one customer is the United States. So the Chinese battle plan literally is for the United States Navy to all sail within sight of the shore so that the Chinese can hit them with their air force. And then for the United States to continue to patrol the global ocean. So they can still import all the food and energy that they want, and that the United States will still keep its market open so that the Chinese can pay for everything. It’s a stupid, stupid, stupid plan. And so if there ever is a real fight between the Americans and the Chinese, not saying there will be, I honestly don’t think there will be. But if there ever is. Then the Chinese will be compromised.

(Asia Pacific CIA agent of influence?) Peter Zeihan book ‘The End Of The World Is Just The Beginning’. The End of the World Is Just the Beginning: Mapping the Collapse of Globalization (2022) by Peter Zeihan Much of the early chapters comprise of a history lesson, pretty much bringing us from the bronze age, through industrialisation, empires and the catalysts for the present globalised world order we currently enjoy. <https://www.amazon.co.uk/End-World-Just-Beginning-Globalization/dp/006323047X>Covering the origins and economics of just about everything that really matters to the modern world, such as agriculture, transport, finance, natural resources, chemicals, industrial manufacturing, oh, and that other rather important topic… Energy. Having also read Peter Zeihans previous books, the Russian invasion of Ukraine came as no surpise. Aptly predicted in “Disunited Nations”. Along with the underlying reasoning and goals of Putin. For those not familar with Zeihan’s work, there’s plenty of content on YouTube. As well as his regular “snippets” on the Russian/Ukraine war. There’s some full recordings of his various presentations to industry, which are well worth watching as an hour long condensed version of the main topics of this book. Many will see the overal message of this book to be pretty dire. However, forewarned is forearmed. There is (some) hope on the hozizon. Most of what this book discusses, highlights and certainly warns us about, is the potential catastrophic unwinding of globalisation. The demographic time-bomb and the break-down of global supply chains, in turn leading to mass shortages, political instability and the seeds for conflict. Although much of this can at least be partly avoided and mitigated, IF…… That said, the self-destruction of the Russian economy that we’re now seeing unfolding before our eyes is a sanitising verification of much of what is written in this book. The simple highlighting of the knock-on effects that a collapsing Russia will impose on the world due to it’s massive disruption to the worlds supply of food (wheat in particular), energy, chemicals, fertilzers and numerous minerals and ore’s. Whether or not you agree with everything that’s written here, and in particular the predictions, you’ll gain a far greater understanding of how the modern world works and interacts. Overall, it’s very well written and a completely compelling read. Complete with plenty of snips of dry humor. If you want a deeper understanding of what’s happening in the world, the effects of Covid, Russia and China! This is an education.

Chairman Mao’s 1920s communist books were funded from Yale University, home of The Skull and Bones society, America’s infamous ‘Brotherhood of Death’ exposed by Prof. Antony Sutton: The political career of Mao, Yale and the “reorientation of thought” (2020) by Federico Soldani On the Yale Daily News (February 29, 1972), the oldest college newspaper founded in 1878 in Yale, one of the first American universities (1701), on the front page in the central article at the top there is a photo of Mao, the Chinese leader of the “great leap forward”. <https://psypolitics.org/2020/07/05/the-political-career-of-mao-yale-and-the-reorientation-of-thought/>As stated in the English Wikipedia entry (access June 7, 2020) dedicated to the Yale-China Association: “Between 1919 and 1920, future Chairman Mao Zedong had several encounters with the school: he edited its student magazine, re-focusing it on “thought reorientation,” and operated a bookshop out of its medical college”. Below, the text of the Yale Daily News article dated 29 February 1972. ~~~ Yale Group Spurs Mao’s Emergence Below the photo of Mao, the following caption: “Yale has helped many young men begin their political rise to power. In the class of 1919, in addition to the 1,000 male leaders graduating in New Haven, Yale-in-China was helping a young man by the name of Mao-Tse-tung. “ William F. Buckley was not the only Yale figure connected with the Presidential trip to China. Without Yale’s support, Mao Tse Tung may never have risen from obscurity to command China. Jonathan Spence, professor of Chinese history, was the first to discover Mao-Tse-Tung’s connection with Yale. The professor noted, “In 1919, Mao, aged 26, was in Changsa, having finished his middle school education. He visited Peking and while there received his…serious introduction to communist theory in Li Ta-chao’s Marxist Study Group. “Now, if he wanted to develop a reputation in socialist circles, he had to find a forum to propagate his views… At this crucial point the student union of Yale-in-China invited Mao to take over the editorship of their journal.” Mao accepted the position and changed the format of the student magazine: it would now deal with social criticism and current problems and focus on “thought reorientation.”…. Mao traveled to Peking and studied Marxist theory. In Shanghai he met Ch’en Tu-hsiu (who later became the leader of the Chinese Communist Party). Mao was told to form an area branch of the Communist party, but he had neither funds nor a meeting place. “Once again Yale stepped in,” recalled Spence. “The medical college of Yale-in-China agreed to rent him three rooms, which Mao named his “culture bookshop.” Business boomed and Mao was able to ring up high sales on such Chinese titles as “An Introduction to Marx’s Capital”, “A Study of the New Russia” and “The Soviet System in China”. “Mao’s reputation grew, and from this base he was able to organize seven branch stores,” continued the professor of Chinese history. “The profits generated were used to finance the socialist youth corps and the communist party.” Professor Spence further noted that because of the success of the bookstore, Mao was chosen as one of the delegates to the First Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai in 1921. From there it was only a small step to becoming one of the founders of the communist movement in his country. Yale-in-China now supports the New Asia College, part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is maintained on donations and is actively hoping to interest the undergraduate community in its affairs.”

Andy Gordon reports on Effective Accelerationism (E/ACC), the tech giants. Silicon Valley Netscape author, now billionaire ‘Kingmaker’, <https://www.historytools.org/people/marc-andreessen-complete-biography>Marc Andreessen‘s Accelerationist manifesto The Techno-Optimist Manifesto by Marc Andreessen – THE TECHNO-CAPITAL MACHINE Combine technology and markets and you get what Nick Land has termed the techno-capital machine, the engine of perpetual material creation, growth, and abundance. We believe the techno-capital machine of markets and innovation never ends, but instead spirals continuously upward. <https://a16z.com/the-techno-optimist-manifesto/>Comparative advantage increases specialization and trade. Prices fall, freeing up purchasing power, creating demand. Falling prices benefit everyone who buys goods and services, which is to say everyone. Human wants and needs are endless, and entrepreneurs continuously create new goods and services to satisfy those wants and needs, deploying unlimited numbers of people and machines in the process. This upward spiral has been running for hundreds of years, despite continuous howling from Communists and Luddites. Indeed, as of 2019, before the temporary COVID disruption, the result was the largest number of jobs at the highest wages and the highest levels of material living standards in the history of the planet. The techno-capital machine makes natural selection work for us in the realm of ideas. The best and most productive ideas win, and are combined and generate even better ideas. Those ideas materialize in the real world as technologically enabled goods and services that never would have emerged <https://a16z.com/the-techno-optimist-manifesto/>de novo. Ray Kurzweil defines his Law of Accelerating Returns: Technological advances tend to feed on themselves, increasing the rate of further advance. We believe in accelerationism – the conscious and deliberate propulsion of technological development – to ensure the fulfillment of the Law of Accelerating Returns. To ensure the techno-capital upward spiral continues forever. We believe the techno-capital machine is not anti-human – in fact, it may be the most pro-human thing there is. It serves us. The techno-capital machine works for us. All the machines work for us. We believe the cornerstone resources of the techno-capital upward spiral are intelligence and energy – ideas, and the power to make them real. INTELLIGENCE We believe intelligence is the ultimate engine of progress. Intelligence makes everything better. Smart people and smart societies outperform less smart ones on virtually every metric we can measure. Intelligence is the birthright of humanity; we should expand it as fully and broadly as we possibly can. We believe intelligence is in an upward spiral – first, as more smart people around the world are recruited into the techno-capital machine; second, as people form symbiotic relationships with machines into new cybernetic systems such as companies and networks; third, as Artificial Intelligence ramps up the capabilities of our machines and ourselves. We believe we are poised for an intelligence takeoff that will expand our capabilities to unimagined heights. We believe Artificial Intelligence is our alchemy, our Philosopher’s Stone – we are literally making sand thik. We believe Artificial Intelligence is best thought of as a universal problem solver. And we have a lot of problems to solve. We believe Artificial Intelligence can save lives – if we let it. Medicine, among many other fields, is in the stone age compared to what we can achieve with joined human and machine intelligence working on new cures. There are scores of common causes of death that can be fixed with AI, from car crashes to pandemics to wartime friendly fire. We believe any deceleration of AI will cost lives. Deaths that were preventable by the AI that was prevented from existing is a form of murder. We believe in Augmented Intelligence just as much as we believe in Artificial Intelligence. Intelligent machines augment intelligent humans, driving a geometric expansion of what humans can do. We believe Augmented Intelligence drives marginal productivity which drives wage growth which drives demand which drives the creation of new supply… with no upper bound.

Nick Land and the Dark Enlightenment. Is the ‘father of Accelerationism’, Nick Land’s ‘Dark Enlightenment’ essay as impenetrable and pretentious as his previous mutterings? Is it visionary? Is it Luciferian? Satanic? Or all three? Neoreaction is not your grandfather’s conservatism, but the web 2.0 era marriage between modern engineering principles and classical anti-democratic thought. <https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/126129110-the-dark-enlightenment---imperium-press>Its central tenet is that the Enlightenment was a mistake, and in The Dark Enlightenment, Nick Land burns progressivism to the ground, salts the earth around its ashes, and raises an altar to anti-humanism in its place. Land explicates the main ideas of neoreaction-the Cathedral, neocameralism, formalism, etc.-always viewing democracy, liberalism, and politics in general through the lens of Darwinism. The result is something like Thomas Hobbes as ghostwritten by H. P. Lovecraft. Included in this volume is an unreleased essay by Land on the writing and impact of The Dark Enlightenment. Dark Enlightenment is also recognizably anti-egalitarian. “The Cathedral”, by which both Land and Moldbug interpret as a broad Left cultural-ideological consensus on a global scale lashes out at anyone who dares to deviate from the egalitarian ideological line. That all human beings are born equal and that the differences can be attributed solely to cultural upbringing is, in Land’s opinion, a statement of ideology and not strictly of fact. He writes, “The central dogma of the Cathedral has been formalized as the Standard Social Scientific Model (SSSM) or blank slate theory”. But against the false choice between biological determinism, so valorized by the right, and social constructivism championed by the left, or at least as Land sees it, he opts for the third option–techno-science. According to Nick Land, we are fast approaching a bionic horizon beyond which population converges with its technics. What our being is, simply becomes an expression of what we can practice. There is no doubt a certain dystopian ring to this idea. The price for third option is that inevitably the wealthy and the powerful will have privileged access to eugenics, genetic engineering and cybernetic improvement of the body and outlive the rest of the human spawn. However, Land is not horrified by this prospect. In a sense, he believes this is quasi teleology being traced by the existing process of techno-capitalism independent of human intentionality, collective or otherwise.

‘Techno Feudalism’ book by Varoufakis. Book Review: <https://socialism.com/fso-article/book-review-techno-feudalism-what-killed-capitalism/>Techno-feudalism: What Killed Capitalism In his latest book Yanis Varoufakis, economist and former Greek Minister of Finance, clutches at clouds as he proclaims the end of capitalism and its replacement by so-called “techno-feudalism.” Varoufakis argues that our present era represents an historical backslide to the time of lords, vassals and serfs. <https://www.lankabusinessonline.com/video-technofeudalism-unveiled-yanis-varoufakis-on-the-fall-of-capitalism/>Only this time around, fiefdoms are digital. Move over capitalists, feudalism’s back with a TikTok twist! Since the book’s publication in 2023, Varoufakis has launched a relentless marketing campaign to promote this idea, targeting establishment platforms such as Fortune, Wired and the National Press Club of Australia. Reviews in The Washington Post, The Guardian, and ABC show that the book has generated considerable buzz online. However, despite the polished marketing and hype, Varoufakis’s argument is muddled and fails to convince. Under the “techno-feudal” setup, according to Varoufakis, capitalists and workers are now at the mercy of “cloudalists,” represented by the likes of Jeff Besos and Mark Zuckerberg. These new digital overlords, who rose to power as a result of internet privatisation and central bank shenanigans, now rule over cloud-based fiefdoms, allowing for unprecedented control over our labour and attention. Under this regime, today’s workers are “cloud proles,” while his term “cloud serf” refers essentially to any smartphone owner. As cloud proles, we’re subjected to algorithmic management through apps like Uber. As “cloud serfs” the most absurd category in the book we unwittingly expand the system with every swipe and click, generating a data profile that can be harvested and sold to advertisers. Users of apps like TikTok, we are told, are comparable to serfs tilling the land on mediaeval estates.

Minister Peter Kyle admits to journalist ‘How do you know I am not an AI bot!’ <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZDFXTiu-tM>Peter Kyle, Minister for Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology, on Matt Chorley’s show – new AI tool used by department nicknamed ‘Humphrey’ after Yes Minister. Problems with AI. Civil Service ‘Humphrey’ AI tools aim to cut back spending and speed up work Some of the tools, named after the fictional Whitehall official Sir Humphrey Appleby from the BBC’s Yes, Minister, are ready for use straight away. <https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/peter-kyle-civil-service-whitehall-bbc-keir-starmer-b1206006.html>A package of AI tools dubbed Humphrey will be rolled out to the Civil Service to cut back on consultant spending and speed up work in Whitehall. Replacing “archaic” technology could save taxpayer-funded services £45 billion by boosting productivity, according to a report on Government technology to be published on Tuesday. Some of the bundle of tools, named after the fictional Whitehall official Sir Humphrey Appleby from the BBC’s Yes, Minister, are ready for civil servants to use right away. One, called Consult, aims to speed up policy decision-making by crunching thousands of responses to consultations within hours and presenting them as interactive dashboards for policymakers and experts. We will use technology to bear down hard to the nonsensical approach the public sector takes to sharing information and working together to help the people it serves Consultants and analysts who do this at the moment can take months to compile responses and bill the taxpayer around £100,000 per consultation. The package for civil servants also includes a tool to analyse decades of parliamentary debates called Parlex, a generative programme to prepare briefings called Redbox and a legal research tool called Lex. The tools are part of a plan to overhaul digital services in a bid to cut costs and make it easier for the public to access services. The Government wants to do away with “antiquated processes” such as queueing at the local council to register a death or posting an advert in the local paper to get a lorry driving licence. It also wants central departments such as HMRC and the Department for Business and Trade to share more data with each other and local councils to crack down on fraud. A new team in Mr Kyle’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology will be tasked with joining up public services so people do not have to tell dozens of organisations the same thing. The Science Secretary said: “Sluggish technology has hampered our public services for too long, and it’s costing us all a fortune in time and money, not to mention the headaches and stresses we’re left with after being put on hold or forced to take a trip to fill out a form. “My department will put AI to work, speeding up our ability to deliver our Plan for Change, improve lives and drive growth. “We will use technology to bear down hard to the nonsensical approach the public sector takes to sharing information and working together to help the people it serves. “We will also end delays businesses face when they are applying for licences or permits, when they just want to get on with the task in hand – growth. This is just the start.” Sir Keir Starmer has said he wants the UK to be an AI “superpower” and to use the technology to boost growth. The Government has said it will “take forward” all 50 recommendations made by tech entrepreneur Matt Clifford, who was commissioned by Mr Kyle in July to come up with a plan to identify AI opportunities. The Government is ramping up efforts to build tools in house but also plans to buy AI solutions from the private sector.
